Groveling to Charlie

The internet café wasn’t busy; there was a major football match being televised that evening. Even so, Edward found that his usual computer had been claimed by an obese, sweaty man with an unconvincing comb-over, so he moved across the room to settle down at another console. He sat staring at the screen, trying to formulate a convincing email to send Charlie. He loathed having to beg a favour from anyone, but it was particularly irksome to have to ask for money from someone he held a grudge against and who he’d so much cause to envy.

‘Mum’s money should’ve been partly mine in the first place. I shouldn’t have to prostrate myself before Charlie and grovel for a tiny portion of what I’m rightfully owed,’ he thought, tapping out a draft email.

He decided to be honest and mention the real reason for his financial request. There was no point in fabricating an excuse for needing the money. If he made Charlie aware it was to be spent on a DNA test, a positive response should be guaranteed.

Surely Charlie wouldn’t have the gall to refuse my reasonable request for money, not once he knows it’s to discover whether I’m a dad? It’d make him her uncle, or half-uncle. He knows all too well that our mother acted abominably to me. It’s the very least he can do to help me out under the circumstances. Last time we met, I could see his guilt in his eyes for always being the favoured son. Edward mused, as he re-read his email for the sixth time. That should do the trick. He pressed the ‘send’ button.

If he’d owned a mobile phone or a landline, he’d have preferred to have spoken to Charlie direct, because he really needed to know the answer immediately to put his mind at rest.

Hope the greedy bastard sends me a reply soon. Can’t wait to find out whether Danielle’s my kid or not. It literally means the world to me, for so many reasons. Maybe I’ll just nip for a half in my local down the road, then pop back here afterwards to see if he’s replied to my email. I won’t be able to sleep until I find out whether he agrees to lend, or preferably give, me the money for the DNA test.

He knew he couldn’t afford to buy a drink in his local pub. He justified the expenditure by reminding himself he should celebrate the possible discovery of a beautiful daughter, albeit twenty-seven years later than he’d have wished.

I should really just go home before returning to the internet café to check if Charlie’s replied to my email. It’d be cheaper, but fuck it! So sick and tired of watching every sodding penny, day in, day out, year in, year out. It grinds my gears! At my age, I shouldn’t have to weigh up whether I can afford a half pint of weak lager.
